For many years I've had a recurring nightmare where I've decided to go back to school for a
graduate degree. In my dream, I've scheduled two classes at the same time, forgotten to go
to class, am failing, and all sorts of other stressful mishaps. Every time I wake up and am so glad that it was just a dream.
Last year while researching for my podcast, I found myself on
a deep dive studying the pathophysiology of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS.) I found that there was not a single book, article, or resource that really explained in detail how PCOS develops and actually works. After reading peer reviewed article after article, I was able to piece together how the syndrome functions. (Or rather, the dysfunction behind it.) I presented my findings in a local class, which you can watch here if you're interested. (The production quality is subpar but it has a lot of helpful information.)
During that research I found a renewed excitement for learning about the human body. I was especially intrigued by the mind-body connection and how it affects the endocrine system. I found a Medical Science Master's Degree program that's offered online through the University of Florida and looked longingly at the classes. Finally, I decided I was going to do it.
This past fall I applied and they're having me take classes as a "non-degree seeking student" before they admit me to the Master's Program. I've studied chemistry and science on a college level and have years of independent learning, but I ended up with my Bachelor's degree in English (23 years ago). They want me to prove myself before admitting me fully to the Master's program; I've got to do 6 credits with a "B" or better to be admitted.
So, here I am! Almost 45 years old and back in school! I'm just taking one class right now so I can get a taste for what I can handle while running a business and being a toddler mom. 🤪 But, I can say I'm officially a grad student now!
I'm also taking an intensive marketing training program so I can move Bubble & Bee forward and spread the "buzz" about my company. So it's been a busy month for me, getting started with both programs. Nic and I switched places; he's working whenever we have a sitter for our son and I'm back at the office full-time so I can make all of this happen!
If I can pull it off and earn my Master's, I'll be able to have some credentials after my name: Stephanie Greenwood, MMSc.
I like how that looks.
